Hockey Academy @ ADSS

The Alberni Hockey Skills Academy, is an educational program offered at Alberni District Secondary School (ADSS) in the Pacific Rim School District. The academy aims to provide student-athletes with an environment where they can pursue their personal hockey skill development alongside their academic studies.

  • The academy provides a safe environment for student-athletes to pursue personal hockey skill development while balancing their academic studies.
  • Located conveniently across the street from the ADSS Campus, the academy utilizes the Alberni Valley Multiplex, a twin hockey rink facility.
  • On-ice skills development includes power skating instruction, video analysis, puck control and shooting, situational skills and drills, and offensive and defensive tactics.
  • The academy is led by Rick Schievink as the lead instructor, supported by Tim Crosby, the physical education instructor at ADSS.
  • Guest instructors from the local BCHL team, the Alberni Valley Bulldogs, including players, coaches, goaltender coaches, and support staff, contribute to the instruction.
  • Testimonials from participants and supporters emphasize the program's positive impact on skill development, fun and encouraging environment, and its ability to earn academic credits.
  • Former participants who have gone on to play in the BCHL and NCAA credit the academy for their success.
  • Educational advisors from the Alberni Valley Bulldogs appreciate the academy's approach and culture in combining hockey with education.

Overall, the Alberni Hockey Skills Academy at ADSS offers student-athletes a dedicated platform to enhance their hockey skills, build positive relationships, and achieve academic excellence.

"I have seen the benefits of this program first hand. As a parent, Hockey Academy provides a great opportunity for kids to learn and develop individual skills in a fun and encouraging environment. As a high school counselor, I have also noticed that all skill levels can benefit from hockey academy because it is a great way for students to do something fun, improve their skills and also gain credits towards graduation"  John McDonald - Hockey Coach and ADSS Counselor

“The Hockey Academy was a huge part of our minor hockey years. It was awesome to be on the ice those extra days to work with the coaches and instructors on skating and skills that have helped us to play in the BCHL and NCAA!”  Leo, Myles & Gerry Fitzgerald - Bemidji State University

“I am proud to be able to work with the Alberni Skills Academy by speaking periodically with their students about the ins and outs of combining hockey with their education in the future. The academy presents a great opportunity for young players to do exactly that while still in high school. I have been very impressed by the approach taken and the culture developed by leaders of the Alberni Academy”  Tom McEvay - Educational Advisor - Alberni Valley Bulldogs
