Day of Mourning

Day of Mourning

As April 28 approaches, the Board of Education recognizes the National Day of Mourning - a day to honour and remember workers who have lost their lives, been injured, or become ill as a result of workplace incidents or hazards.

This day is observed across Canada and serves as a reminder of the importance of health and safety in every workplace and community. In our school district, this commitment extends to ensuring safe and supportive environments for all students, staff, and visitors. We also recognize the importance of building awareness among young people. Many of our students are entering the workforce for the first time, whether through part-time employment or future career pathways. Supporting them in understanding their rights and responsibilities in the workplace - including the right to safe working conditions and to refuse unsafe work - is an important part of preparing them for success beyond school.

On April 28, flags at the Board Office will be flown at half-mast, and schools and sites are encouraged to observe a moment of silence at 11:00 a.m. as a time for reflection. We remain committed to fostering a culture of safety, care, and responsibility across our district and in the broader community.
