Literacy Week

Ideas to help support the learning we will do during Literacy week!

In the coming weeks we will have the opportunity to read the story Our Table by Peter H. Reynolds.

This story is about a family that is learning to connect and make memories while gathering for family mealtime.

As part of their learning your child might bring home their “Our Table” conversation container. This container includes ideas of topics for conversations

you can have as a family. You can also simply share stories about your day with each other at mealtimes.

Developing oral language and communication skills is an important part of your child’s literacy development. Spending time talking while enjoying a meal can help your child practice listening, speaking, taking turns and asking questions.

After mealtime, enjoy spending more time together by staying at the table to play a card game, play a board game, read stories, colour, draw or build something.

 Happy family mealtime!

Another book we will be working with in our lead up top Literacy week is Our Ancestor’s Kitchen by Willie Poll. This story

is about a grandmother that is teaching her grandchild to prepare a special family recipe.

We will support this learning by having conversations as a class about special or favourite meals we like to enjoy with our families.

To extend this learning, students are invited to bring in a copy of a favourite family recipe to share with the class. We will use the recipes practice reading ingredient lists, measurements and directions.

Thanks for sharing in our learning!
