Armada Sr. Boys Basketball – Parklands Tournament Dec 6/7 2013 in Sidney, BC
The Armada Sr. Boys basketball team place 3rd in their first tournament action of the season. The team’s first game on Friday night resulted in a convincing win over Spectrum 75-47. The starters took early control with a 20-5 lead after the first quarter. This allowed reserve players an opportunity to play and they took full advantage of the extra playing time and pushed the lead higher by each quarter. High scorer of the game was Adam Yaredic with 15 points and 7 rebounds, followed by Sam Moncur with 13 and 6.
Saturday morning the Armada played the eventual tournament winners, McMath from Richmond, and lost 84-60. The game was lost in the first quarter as the starters had a difficult time getting their offence in gear. Numerous unforced turnovers allowed McMath to take a 35-11 first quarter lead. The boys settled down after the quarter break but could not dig themselves out of the hole they placed themselves in. Adam Yaredic had a second strong game leading the boys with 14 pts and 12 rebounds.
The team had another tough start against their final opponent Cedar Secondary. The Spartans played a 2-3 defensive zone coverage and the Armada quickly fell behind 7-1. After adjusting the offence the boys calmly battled back and were only 1 point down by the end of the 1st quarter. By half the Armada led 37-30 and continued to control the remainder of the game winning 83-74. This game featured a strong performance by grade 11 player Sam Moncur. He finished with 27 points with majority of these coming from his 7 three pointers. He also chipped in 11 rebounds and led the Armada to a 3rd place finish. For his strong play through all three games, Sam was named to the tournament team. Team captain, Josh De Jong, also had a strong game with 17 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 steals.
