Orange Shirt Day and National Day of Truth and Reconciliation

national day for truth and reconciliation

This week students at John Howitt Elementary will be learning about the impact of residential schools, like the one here in the Alberni Valley. Students will also be learning about why we wear orange. We will wear orange on Thursday, September 29th to honour residential school survivors and those students who did not come home. Orange Shirt Day honours the experiences of Indigenous Peoples, celebrates resilience, and affirms a commitment that every child matters.  There will be no school on Friday, September 30th as we mark and acknowledge National Truth and Reconciliation Day across BC and Canada.
