The high school wrestling season begins in early November and ends at the beginning of March with the Provincial Championships. Some athletes do continue as they train and compete for National Championships or other tournaments such as the BC Summer Games and there are other opportunities during the off season to participate in camps and other competitions.
The Warriors wrestling program has been developing for the last 18 years from a small group of students practicing on folding gymnastics mats to a very successful program with students from grade 6 to grade 12 participating. We have also run a Junior Warriors program for kids in grades 1-7 at both Ucluelet Elementary School and Wickaninnish community School. Our athletes have had success both on an off the mats. Our girls and boys teams have consistently placed in the top ranks on Vancouver Island. Beyond that however, our program has provided countless good memories while contributing to the growth of healthy, positive and responsible young people.
The main goal of our wrestling program is for our athletes to have a fun and rewarding experience. Personal development is encouraged through learning skills, training hard and being a good teammate, as well as representing the school and interacting with wrestlers from other schools and clubs.
Wrestling is an individual sport, which allows for each athlete to set and strive for his or her own personal goals. Some wrestlers will demand excellence of themselves while others may set simpler goals such as attending every practice or winning a match in a tournament. It is up to each athlete to decide how far they want to take themselves. It is, however, important for teammates to attend practice and support each other as a team.
