Vancouver Island University Scholarships

VIU FULL TUITION SCHOLARSHIPS
INFORMATION AND SELECTION GUIDELINES
 
School Selection / Principal Endorsement forms for both of the scholarships listed below will be available on our VIU website in late February at:
 
 
Deadline for submission:   April 30th each year
 

 
 
The following full tuition scholarships are available for top grade 12 academic students from all public and private high schools on Vancouver Island, including Powell River.
 
 
-          VIU President’s Entrance Scholarship for Vancouver Island High School Students
 
1 full tuition scholarship is available to top academic students from each Vancouver Island Public and Private high school, including Powell River.  Students must have achieved an "A" average in high school (Grade 11 & 12 marks, with no mark lower than a B).  These scholarships are renewable for the duration of the student’s undergraduate studies at VIU, up to the completion of their first bachelor’s degree (maximum 5 years). To qualify for renewal, students must maintain both a semester and cumulative gpa of 3.67 (1st class level) with a 100% course load (minimum 15 credits) in each semester.
 
Selection process:  Late March / early April, high school Principals will identify their top academic students and determine if they are planning to attend VIU.  The Principal will complete the “School Selection / Principal Endorsement” form for the selected student and submit, with the student’s transcripts, to VIU’s Financial Aid & Awards Office by the April 30th deadline.
 
 
-          VIU Chancellor’s Entrance Scholarship for Aboriginal Students
 
A total of 6 awards are available to top academic aboriginal students, from First Nations communities, Friendship Centres or Metis organizations on Vancouver Island, including Powell River. Students must have achieved a minimum “A” average in High School (Grade 11 & 12 marks, with no mark lower than a “B”).  These scholarships are renewable for the duration of the student’s undergraduate studies at VIU, up to the completion of their first bachelor’s degree (maximum 5 years). To qualify for renewal, students must maintain both a semester and cumulative gpa of 3.67 (1st class level) with a 100% course load (minimum 15 credits).
 
Selection process:  Late March / early April, Education Counsellors / Principals, will identify their top academic Aboriginal students, and if they are planning to attend VIU, the Principal will complete the “School Selection / Principal Endorsement” form and submit, with the student’s transcripts, to VIU’s Financial Aid & Awards Office by the April 30th deadline.
 
Note:  Only the top six students will be selected from ALL school submissions, for the Chancellor’s Entrance Scholarship, by VIU’s Financial Aid & Awards Office.

 
SELECTION GUIDELINES
 
 
Please use the following courses when determining your top academic students for both of the above noted scholarships: 
 
 
 
   Grade 11:      4 courses
 
                         1:   English 11                      
      2:   Math 11
      3:   Social Studies 11, Civic Studies 11 or First Nations Studies 12
      4:   Science 11 (Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Earth Science)
 
 
 
   Grade 12:         4 courses
 
                         1:   English 12 (blended or class mark, whichever is highest)        
      2:   Any academic 12 course
      3:   Any academic 12 course
                         4:   Any academic 12 course, or Field of interest course            
 
 
 
The successful candidates will be offered priority registration, and will receive detailed information from our Registration Office, with regards to enrolment dates, times and procedures.
 
 
Note:         
 
It is recommended that early in the grade 12 year, you identify your top students based on grade 11 marks and discuss the possibility of a VIU * “full-ride” scholarship with these students.
