Mediated talks between the BCTF and BCPSEA were unable to reach an agreement and Mediator Ready declared an impasse on Saturday, August 30 th . As a result, the labour dispute continues and it is anticipated that SD70 (Alberni) schools will be behind BCTF picket lines on Tuesday, September 2 nd .
Teacher strike action will again impact the school district's ability to provide educational services for students. The presence of picketing will mean that buses will not run and we will not be able to offer our regular instruction as it is unlikely that unionized staff will cross picket lines. As communicated previously, we encourage parents not to send their children to school but to seek alternate childcare arrangements. Should any students arrive at school our school administrators will ensure that they are cared for until they can be safely returned to their homes under the supervision of a parent or guardian.
It is disappointing that mediation has been unsuccessful in bringing the parties closer to a negotiated settlement and that the disruption to students' schooling continues into the 2014/15 school year. We sincerely hope that the impasse is quickly resolved and that our district can return to normal operations as soon as possible.
